Tea Party Network News Commits Fauxtrageous Sin Amongst Collectivist Neocon GOP Set

I know a thing or two about the teaparty movement. Since we started the seemingly now-dead movement, I’ve been amused by all manner of imps and demons ready to swoop in and suck the life out of such a principled origin. This week’s events are just as entertaining.

DISSENT!

A tortured chorus of “HOW DARE YOU NOT SUPPORT MITT ROMNEY?” cries rose up from the collectivist wing of the GOP set yesterday over an announcement from the new Tea Party Network News website that was launched this week. Oh, the horror!

An except from the announcement on the Tea Party Network News site:

WASHINGTON D.C.The Tea Party News Network (TPNN) today announced its editorial endorsement for the 2012 presidential race: None of the above.

“We have watched the candidates closely over the past year and are convinced that four more years of an Obama presidency would be disastrous for this country’s economy and for the cause of small government,” Todd Cefaratti, editor of the Tea Party News Network, said today. “We considered an endorsement of Governor Mitt Romney, but concluded that his record raises too many questions about the level of his commitment to conservative principles and limited government. The Tea Party has been burned too many times by Washington politicians who promise change but don’t deliver once elected. As the voice of Tea Party conservatives across America, we are not comfortable endorsing either major party candidate this year based solely upon hopeful rhetoric. Our approach echoes Ronald Reagan’s advice on the Soviet Union: ‘Trust but Verify.’”

ZOMG!!! NOTA!!! NOTA = none of the above. The poor Libertarians know this acronym, and old saw, all too well from their conventions. This thinking is a rather sharp departure from modern Republicanism where someone always has to have a plan (see: “the Ryan plan”). Is this a trick or some sort of ploy hatched by the Tea Party News Network to dupe unsuspecting conservatives into thinking this is real teaparty group? Sounds authentic on its face, doesn’t it?

Let’s dig beyond the surface.

Todd Cefaratti? Where have I heard that name before? Oh yeah, he’s the guy who raised $500k under TheTeaParty.net banner and spent it on God knows what. No legit teapartiers knew who this organization was when that website launched. I moderated the teapartiers mailing list for 3 years which was made up of many of the leaders and founders in the movement like Michael Leahy (well on the road to redemption), Ben Cunningham (always one of the good guys), and Dana Loesch (she’s since been a huge disappointment in her attacks on conservatives in defense of pornographers, scammers, and snitches). I emailed the teapartiers mailing list in the beginning of 2011 and asked if any of members had heard of TheTeaparty.net. Only Ben Cunningham had heard of them and linked us to a couple articles which painted this organization as questionable at best and as charlatans at worst. I’d turned Melissa Clouthier on to this story and she wrote an exposé, referring to TheTeaparty.net as snake oil salesmen, but I can’t find it now. I emailed Melissa to see if she could link me to that article, but she’s not responded yet. I’m sure my inability to find this old article is simply an oversight on my part, right?

Bottom line, Cefaratti = TheTeaparty.net and Tea Party Network News. As an aside, Dan Backer, the attorney handling Aaron Walker’s bogus $60+ million lawsuit against Brett Kimberlin, over an iPad pic and a protection order, is one of the principles of TheTeaparty.net and I’d guess that he may be associated with Tea Party Network News too. More on that later.

INFIGHTING

Here’s the more interesting personal twist on the sin of “none of the above” - John Hawkins of Right Wing News, and most recently a member of Tea Party Network News, posted this CPAC 2012 schedule which shows TheTeaParty.net sponsored all of CPAC’s highlighted events. Pay close attention to the names of the presenters and hosts:

PS: Monday of next week, look for my big CPAC picture post wrap-up!

Let’s see what some of these people who were quite willing to be propped up in front of conservatives on Cefaratti’s dime at CPAC, had to say about Cefaratti and his TheTeaParty.net/Tea Party Network News cohorts today. Mind you, none of these people were organizers of any teaparty events back in early 2009. This is a small sampling.

And, of course, the mystery wimp known as RBPundit had this to say:

Fascinating. They’re all spouting off against Tea Party Network News because they want everyone to vote for the Keynesian duo of Romney and Ryan, NOT because Tea Party Network News has a shady origin with respect to the teaparty movement. Can you say SNAFU? They’re slobbering all over themselves to support big government central planners with an R attached to their names. I wonder how Hawkins will respond now that he’s one of the writers at Tea Party Network News.

THE CRUX

Who could blame the everyman for being confused? Here’s the Tea Party Network News organization with dubious beginnings holding a legitimate teaparty position, while the echo chamber conservatives take an unprincipled “party first” position.

I was on the very first conference call about the teaparty movement. I can assure you that TARP and the Prescription Drug Act were part of the reasons we started the movement (both of which were supported by Ryan and Romney) - the movement wasn’t only about rejecting Obamacare and the so-called “Stimulus” bill. Anyone claiming today that this is the case, so that they can convince you to abandon your principles, is a liar or is wholly ignorant to the history of the teaparty movement.

I’d like you to answer this: How is voting for Mr. Romneycare and Tarpyboy Ryan not a complete surrender of teaparty principles? I’ve never met Cefaratti, so I have no reason to trust him, but at least their message is on-point from a teaparty perspective. This doesn’t mean I’m endorsing Tea Party Network News. Shoot the messenger? Even a blind pig can find an acorn - and demons believe that Jesus is of the Father.

The GOP gave you Bush (TARP, Prescription Drug Act), then they gave you McCain, and we didn’t like it one bit. We started the teaparty in large part due to those reasons. The teaparty handed the 2010 mid-term to the GOP on a silver platter. And how did the neocon GOP respond? With a big “F*ck you!” in 2012 by giving you the guy who created Romneycare (the individual mandate that Obamacare was modelled after, and what was originally promoted by The Heritage Foundation) as the candidate they felt represented conservatism? Really?

TÊTE-À-TÊTE

Listen, conservatives, libertarians, federalists, and right-leaning independents, vote your conscience based on your principles. DO NOT let the unfortunate prevailing Trotskyite/Neocon collectivism in certain quarters of the GOP try to admonish you into voting for the Keynesian Romney/Ryan ticket due to their Chicken Little, sky-will-fall-if-Romney-isn’t-elected, hysteria. Will the controlling neocon factions within the GOP in support of Romney learn from their misdeeds if you’re there to continually catch them like a group of wayward toddlers just learning to walk? Let them fall on principle. Trust me, the God of our Founding Fathers is the same God of today, and he’s big enough to catch-all of us if the neo-Marxists win in 2012.

It really does beg the question - do these people have any faith in their God or not? Doesn’t seem like it, does it? I, for one, am completely comfortable standing on principle by NOT voting for the unambiguously Keynesian duo. Maybe it’s time that the neocon elements of the GOP lost your support for their sins for a change.

George Washington’s parting words as president were a warning to “…moderate the fury of party spirit, to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism…”

I’ll take principles and stand with George Washington over the cacophony of pretended patriotism within the conservative echo chamber any day of the week.

Hmm. Who would have thought that scammers would attempt to line their pockets with the hard-earned cash of conservatives?

    Oh. That’s right. Us.

After a decade and a half of activism in favor of First Principles, saying “I told you so” isn’t the thing that’s gotten old, for me. What *has* gotten old, and frustrates me to no end, is the fact that I even have to say “I told you so” anymore. How are there still so many damn people who don’t (or won’t) get it?

    • http://brooksbayne.com brooksbayne

It’s all about reach, influence, and exposure. People only think about and react to what they see. Name one of these “conservatives” in the echo chamber that comes to mind when you think “first principles”. I can’t name one of them. Most of these so-called thought leaders have been brainwashed themselves by 50 years of neocon influence in DC.

The flow is something like this:

Professional neocons in DC put out their agenda via think tanks and talking heads in their circles -> journalists and bloggers write their “me too” posts -> talking heads parrot the same -> finally, the poor everyman gets 15 slants to the original neocon talking point and thinks he’s been given provided diversity of thought.

For the most part, people don’t know that they don’t know. Until conservatives demand first principles thinkers in the same way they demanded teaparty (short-lived as that was) principles, we have to be intentional about exposing them to first principles thought.

    • kimvy

People can’t or won’t think anymore. This is what 40+ years of liberalism has brought. Participation badges, feelings above rationalization, etc, etc, etc. It’s become easy and acceptable to shut off the brain and let “someone else” worry about it. A good example is that even with five days warning people didn’t even have extra food and water in case they were hit by Sandy. Why bother if the government is going to “handle it”, right? Ooooof.

It’s going to be a long, hard slog to turn that around and people selling out for the GOP version of the democrat cocktail circuit only makes it all that much harder. I’m starting to wonder if it’s possible.

  • http://twitter.com/ttjemery Thomas

Thanks for the article, Brooks. Very well thought out and researched very good as well. I actually have no problem with – The Tea Party News Network (TPNN) not endorsing no one. Plus I think the statement “Our approach echoes Ronald Reagan’s advice on the Soviet Union: ‘Trust but Verify.’” should of cleared the air on why they didn’t.

OK with that being said 2008 was the first election that I had voted for a Moderate Republican like John McCain. I in the past had voted third Party because they candidates were never as Conservative as I would of liked. So back to McCain I voted for him because I knew how Ultra-Liberal Obama was as I live in the same state that he was a state Senator and a US Senator he was for and knew the danger he poised to the USA.(Namely speaking of a bill he voted against “Born Alive Act” which would of granted babies who survived a botched abortion the ability to receive medical help while it was their screaming to their death) No shame no quilt in my thought there.

So anyways I have decided still to vote for Romney in this election and am not going to guilt and shame people if they don’t choose too. My only beef is with the ones going to sit home and not vote at all. There has to be someone running in their local elections they can support and if not at least go in and write in a Conservative name on these ballots to send a message to the Establishment that we want our Conservative values recognized and pushed into law.

Thanks again Brooks and God Bless.

The TEA Party isn’t a thing with a set of keys that can be co-opted by any one individual or group. It’s best recognized it’s a climate

The entire establishment political class is corrupt. And it has
declared open war against those Americans still left who believe in
fiscal responsibility and a constitutional check on federal powers.
Both the establishment Republicans and the Democrats (and their
ancillary and parasitic attendants in the media and the
inside-the-beltway political machinery) have shown themselves
immediately willing to scapegoat the one anti-big government faction
willing to insist on making the difficult choices necessary to save the
country from the bloated, cynical, complacent pig class who presumes to
run it in our name — though never in the way we wish. And that’s
because party doesn’t really matter any longer, as I’ve been saying for
    years now.

What we are witnessing is the ruling class vs. the governed — a fight
we among the governed are only really taking up after the ruling class
has already gobbled up the allegiance of a huge swath of its quarry by
turning them into either clients or dependents (something that would
likely never happen with, say, a flat or fair tax, incidentally, which
is one of the reasons no serious push for one ever comes out of DC).

The TEA Party is an impediment, one that the professional political
class needs to see weakened, if not entirely marginalized. And that’s
because the TEA Party is threatening the mechanism of cheap grace,
power, and perks these politicians live on.

But what they don’t seem to understand about the TEA Party is that it isn’t an actual party.
Instead, it is a mindset, a counter-revolutionary impulse to the
counter-revolutionary coup of Big Centralized Government against the
founding and framing of this country.

They can’t kill the TEA Party. Because the TEA Party can disband only as a descriptor.
The attitude and beliefs that give it its most visible shapes, from
time to time — be it as the revolutionaries who broke from a King, or as
the Reagan Revolution, or as teh TEA Party — cannot be disgraced or
marginalized. Because the attitude and beliefs that give rise to
iterations like the TEA Party are the attitudes and beliefs that in a
very real sense are this country and, insofar as we really do
believe in the words of our own Declaration of Independence, are the
beliefs and attitudes shared by all men and women who wish to break free
of tyranny and live their lives not as subjects, but rather under a set
of natural rights that governments exist solely to protect.

The TEA Party the establishment ruling class is hoping to marginalize
and destroy here is a kind of mist: it can disperse and then reappear
in new forms, under new names and descriptions, but it is always the
same, and it always has the same goals and desires. It is, in that
sense, the very atmosphere of this country.

The establishment politicians are now battling a climate. And if
they can’t sense the very real dangers of the storm clouds on the
horizon, they’re in for an awakening of stunning proportions. - Jeff Goldstein, 8/7/11

If Mitt Romney fails to win this election, the first order of business of the TEA Party (or whatever it’s descriptor - flag we decide to furl) will be to #AbandonTheGOP. If he wins, then we redouble our efforts to hold his statist feets to the fire, for to keep his nose clean. Because we’ve got a little Republic to save, and it’s looking pretty damned grim for it at this junct-ure.

  • kimvy

Fascinating post for those of us without our handy scorecard. It seems that the “new conservative movement” is the same at the establishment of both the Dems and GOP - it’s all about the cocktail parties and being seen rather than to promote conservative ideas.

It seems that people are okay as long as they are following the party line, contributing to the bar tab no matter how they came across that money or what kind of moral compass they have. The moment they step of the plantation they become persona non grata. Now where have we seen that before? Right… it’s what the liberals do.

    • http://twitter.com/SemperBanU Charlie Johnson

” it’s all about the cocktail parties and being seen rather than to promote conservative ideas.”

      Dead on.

  • http://twitter.com/SemperBanU Charlie Johnson

It is about co-opting the only thing that got the old line GOP to ever crap their pants.

Fear is the only thing that politicians respond to. Fear of losing their jobs, their privileges, their station in life.

Obedient message-slaves willing to compromise any principle in the name of the amorphous Party cause may generate a moment of gratitude and recognition from those in elected office from time to time. But they will never garner the respect of those who rule. The willingness to bend principle and attack those who uphold First Principles identifies one as weak minded, weak willed and easily manipulated.

Yet those same people are the self declared top tier of “activists” for “the right” on social media.

The actual Tea Party - the one that got in the faces of politicians, asked tough questions, and insisted on being answered - that group of people produced abject fear among the ruling class.

People need to choose. Reinforce the mechanisms that insulate politicians or strip it away so your demands are heard and your will obeyed.

This is a great article in pointing out the hypocrisy within the ‘Conservative’ movement. Conservatives say “limited government” but either have no clue or just blindly follow despotic leaders. It seems to me that ‘conservatives’ if serious about conservative platforms of fiscal responsibility, limited government and a Jeffersonian foreign policy, would vehemently oppose Romney/Ryan.

Mitt Romney, supported the TARP bailouts, Patriot Act and National Defense Authorization Act. Which essentially repeals the 4th, 5th and 10th Amendments. There are more unconstitutional laws he supported as well, but for the sake of time I’ll just highlight those. The Tea Party of 2008 would be horrified that Mitt Romney is the GOP nominee. He’s the antithesis of that whole movement. Much like America being born out of mistrust of government and rebellion, the Tea Party of 2008 was also formed. So TPNN not endorsing anyone is actually a bold step in the right direction.

Also, because of the consistent hypocrisy demonstrated by the Tea Party, I no longer identify with them. The original Tea Party began with Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign and has since strayed so far I don’t even recognize it. The Tea Party has been taken over by the Loeschs and the Malkins, and I refer to them as the ‘Breitbartarians’, the “conservatives in socialist drag” D. Loesch.

My hope is that ‘Conservatives’ will once again be conservatives and “fight the good fight.”

    • http://twitter.com/casiichandler Casey Chandler

The GOP has done a fantastic job of parasitically sucking the blood out
of the ‘tea-party’ movement to make it one of their own so they can use
their superstar demagogues to spout pro-war, pro-spending bull shit.

      • http://twitter.com/1Marchella Marchella

Yes! The GOP wanted a “grassroots” movement to make them relevant and make them appear ‘for the people’ when in actuality they engage in the same thuggish tactics the progressives employ.

The GOP is just the ‘conservative’ wing of the Democratic party now.

    • gadsdengurl

You are right…. actually we started it in NH in 2007 in DECEMBER.

      • http://twitter.com/1Marchella Marchella

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bNiDx7qTjA# Yep, the Tea Party was started by Ron Paul’s grassroots in 2007. I remember it like it was yesterday.

        • http://brooksbayne.com brooksbayne

no, the teaparty moneybombs and campaign events weren’t related to the modern teaparty movement. they share the name, that’s about it. i know i keep saying it, but i was there for the first organizing call the day after santelli’s rant. no ron paulers were involved. none.

          • http://twitter.com/1Marchella Marchella

Did you watch that video? Many from Fox, which isn’t saying much give credit to Ron Paul for being the grandfather of the Tea Party. This particular disagreement is minor compared to the major problems this country faces, so I’m encouraged we both agree on those things.

          • http://brooksbayne.com brooksbayne

i don’t care what the fox tards say. i was there from day one. i know, they don’t. fox and the beltway establishment were still wrinkling their noses at us until 9-11-2009, and then they poured millions in to co-opt the movement.

    • http://brooksbayne.com brooksbayne

i’ll agree with most everything you wrote other than the origin of the teaparty movement. ron paul’s teaparty campaign fundraisers have no connection to the modern teaparty movement. where was ron paul february 27 2009? he was on stage at cpac not mentioning the teaparty. i was there from day one on the very first phone call of the modern teaparty movement and we had no involvement with any of ron paul’s fundraisers. two completely different uses of the term “teaparty” - one was used for ron paul’s fundraising campaign and the other was used to protest government spending. there have been other “teaparty” events and mini-movements over the years going all the way back to the original. some backstory on the movement: http://www.broadsidebooks.net/2011/05/19/ron-paul-is-not-the-founder-of-the-tea-party-movement/

      • http://twitter.com/1Marchella Marchella

It started in 2007 with Ron Paul’s presidential campaign: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bNiDx7qTjA# By 2009 it started being hijacked by establishment republicans, like Palin, Beck, Morris…..I can find other news sources that credit Ron Paul being the Father of the Tea Party, I was very involved in his 2008 campaign and can give you a timeline of how it started.

Whatever happened to “Anyone but Romney” which was the rallying cry of conservatives at the start of the primaries.

Romney is DEFINITELY NOT a Conservative and neither is Ryan who voted for everything the Tea Party stood against.
Romney is not even a Republican, he does not advocate Republican values.

But what was left of the Tea Party sold out.
They sold out their values and their principles.

But more than that they SOLD OUT their SOULS.

Hmmmm! I think alot of people forgot what being a Conservative is all about! Its NOT about a the better blog, website, paper or radio show that you can do! Its NOT about “Porn, T-Shirts, Nasty Pictures,Spam Blocking or Competition with one another” either! And it definetly isn’t about how much FREAKING money you can raise by scamming others!! Its about Patriotism, Liberty and Our Constitution! What I see on Twitter from your so-called Conservatives is a JOKE! That is one of the main reasons I followed Brooks Bayne and The Trenches for the truth and some FREAKING real Conservatives!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/soylentblue Soylentblue

Wow Brooks, keep up the fight and keep channeling George Washington.

Neocons are the same kind of self serving turds as Marxist political machine clones except claiming to operate off of conservative principles while doing hair-brained things based upon half-baked ideologies.

Falling in line behind a candidate is a mindless endeavor that has gotten us to where we are now in America. Mitt Romney needs the same level of scrutiny (and ridicule) that Obama gets and it doesn’t matter if it comes from someone claiming to be the tea party through their own narcissism. Their stance is legitimate and ad-hominem attacks against them come off as petty and intellectually dishonest.

  • http://thekencarroll.blogspot.com/ Ken Carroll

First of all, the concept of ‘groupthink’ and conservatives or libertarians is antithetical. Anyone who is a part of the TEA Party movement doesn’t need anyone else to compile a list of suggested candidates.

Second, the term Tea Party is not trademarked and if it were then Lewis Carroll (no relation to yours truly) would likely own the rights. Anyway, the words ‘Tea Party’ attached to a questionable organization still leaves that organizational questionable. As for the Tea Party Network, I don’t know who they are, where they came from and I don’t give a damn. I make up my own mind.

I voted early for Mitt Romney and because he has Georgia sewn up, I did feel a momentary urge to vote for Gary Johnson but I did not. I chose to support Romney, but for goodness’ sake vote your own ideals and your own conscience. Don’t let me or Brooks or the Tea party Network tell you how to vote - unless you are contemplating voting for the current Failure in Chief, in which case I suggest immediate psychiatric evaluation and an avoidance of sharply edged objects.

There are consequences for all we do. Make your own decisions and accept them.

“I leave this rule for others when I’m dead

  • gadsdengurl

Tea party was not started by GOPers… but liberty lovers of no particular partisanship in 2007. They do not endorse candidates or give money to candidates. Their friends are Peter Schiff and Rick Santelli. We could not get any media coverage because we are anti-war, anti-foreign aid. But Rick ranted about us, and got us some publicity so these fakers hijacked us in 2009. We’d already had several tea parties, and a big one in DC on July 12 2008.

  • http://twitter.com/PaddyJManning Paddy Manning

Even demons believe that Jesus is of the Father! the relationship between the Tea party & the republican party was always going to be tense: either the Tea Party would succeed & fundamentally transform the GOP or the gains delivered by the Tea Party would be used to prop up the progressive/Big Government side of the Republicans without any real change. The latter seems to be the result so far.Would Ron Paul have been closer to the spirit of the movement?

Politics is the art of the possible, ideological purity won’t help. Barack Obama needs to be removed from office. Whatever Romney is or is not he represents far less danger to basic freedoms & to the economy than Obama. Better he will have to work with Tea Party Republicans to get anything done.
Tea Party has succeeded by swinging the debate around: nothing happens overnight & there are always band-waggoners ready to jump aboard a name.
As an outsider one of the saddest things i see about the American Right across all it’s spectrum is the inability to agree core or common issues & a terrible ability to fight within.
Ther work of the Tea Party to create a free market, anti interventionist sound money Republican Party must go on, otherwise the US will be condemmed to endless war, deficits & poverty.

  • http://twitter.com/1Marchella Marchella

I know it was purely from the grassroots, there was no centralized power structure which made it really unique. I was saying the GOP hijacked the movement and turned it into something completely different.

  • Ben Froland

More flawed reasoning from the echochamber and a demonstrable detachment from Tea Party principles. Refusing to endorse is actually a principled stance that sends these folks into a tizzy and of course they label those who dissent as “irrelevant.” Vote for who you want but an endorsement would indicate agreement on policy, values, and principles. I wouldn’t expect a pro-life group to endorse a pro-choice candidate just because they’re GOP or a 2nd amendment group to endorse a gun-control advocate because they’re GOP. Yet any group labeling itself as “tea party” is expected to blindly endorse Romney/Ryan despite TARP, Medicare Part-D, Romneycare, unconstitutional AIG bonus confiscation, auto bailouts, etc… Endorsing candidates was the beginning of the end for our local tea party group and it soon became nothing more than a mouthpiece for the GOP. Regardless of who wins tomorrow we need to stand on principle and hold ALL elected officials accountable.

  • gadsdengurl

Any tea party that collects money is a GOP PAC and NOT LEGIT. The only tea party that is legit is the one started in 2007 by the liberty community and still going strong… they don’t carry water for the GOP either.
